Looking for Stories of Nonprofit Resilience

A blog post by the Gates Foundation’s Darin McKeever on Tactical Philanthropy talked about how resilience is “an underappreciated quality of organizations in the social sector.” He defined resilience as “the ability of matter to spring back quickly into shape after being bent, stretched, or deformed."
Nonprofits face internal and external pressures that affect their very resilience, oftentimes simultaneously. We’ve heard of many nonprofits that weren’t able to withstand the onslaught from the recent and historic recession. There are, however, nonprofits that adapted to the recession, responded creatively and met increased demands on their services in uncertain times, and perhaps, even emerged as better and stronger organizations, thanks in part to the support of a foundation(s).
Do you know of or are a part of such an organization? Did a foundation (or group of foundations) help make this possible? We’d like to hear your story!
We are working on the summer issue of Responsive Philanthropy, our quarterly journal, and we’re looking for anecdotes to include in an article that will focus on philanthropy and nonprofit resilience.
As Mr. McKeever pointed out, foundations are one source of a number of constant challenges faced by nonprofits (he cites limited operating reserves, complicated RFPs and NOFAs, and disproportionate reporting requirements). And foundations are part of the solution.
Interested organizations should send us an email with the following information:
- Name of Organization:
- Primary Contact Name, Email, Phone Number and Organization’s website:
- Your own contact information, if you’re not affiliated with the organization:
- Brief description of its mission, programs/activities:
- Brief summary on how it adapted to the recession, responded creatively to meet increased demand and improve the overall effectiveness and strength of the organization, and the role that any funder played that helped make these possible.
Responsive Philanthropy has nearly 500 paid subscribers, is widely distributed at important philanthropy and nonprofit conferences and other events, and individual articles are made available for free on our website and promoted via social media. So this is a great opportunity to promote your organizations.
Please share your experiences with us and Responsive Philanthropy readers!
