Thoughtful Self-reflection among Arts & Culture Philanthropists

The Grantmakers in the Arts winter 2012 edition includes a thoughtful piece comprising self-reflection by staff from five grantmaking institutions – The Boston Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Alternate ROOTS and The Woods Fund of Chicago. They grapple with the question “What is the purpose and relevance of our arts and culture philanthropy in today’s world?” posed by Holly Sidford in Fusing Arts, Culture and Social Change.

Sidford’s writing was the third in our series of High Impact Strategies for Philanthropy reports encouraging issue-specific funders to rethink their funding strategies to generate the greatest impact. The first report was for education funders, the second for health funders and our most recent report is for environment and climate funders.

It’s heartening to see that the series is helping funders reflect on their grantmaking practices and it is our hope that each of these reports, produced in partnership with the issue-specific affinity group, will be used in exactly these ways.

So, congratulations and thank you to each of these authors for this great piece and for leading by example. We look forward to hearing from other funders who have engaged in their own critical self-reflection.

  • I am heartened by this research and all the thoughtful, articulate people speaking out on behalf of the value of arts and culture.
I know and have seen,on my own local level, the impact of the work happening through the Fostering Art and Culture Project in Franklin County, MA.
To imagine it percolating up to the national level, for real, is an encouraging visual.
